Hoodies Daily

Let’s be clear from the outset today, hate speech is not freedom of speech. If you’re one of the people who mouth off on social media, if you send anonymous messages and if you think that yelling and swearing into a phone or on a podcast is you exercising your right to free speech then I’m sorry you are just as delusional as the people that believe in conspiracy theories, in fact you probably do. The Helen Haines attack has again laid bear the incompetence of the Albanese government but also shown that mainstream media and social media both fuel hate and division. How do we stop it? Well we cant really but we do need better accountability for social media in particular while indeed protecting freedom of speech.

The PM is right when he says we need to take the temperature down, but unfortunately he caused a good portion of it and now we are left with this swamp of toxicity and hate that we need to come to terms with. Why? Because Mike Burgess is correct when he said words do have an impact because they escalate an issue and when in the hands of those that are easily lead or manipulated we see incidents like the Helen Haines one. The solution? Better accountability for social media companies sooner rather than later and Albo not being so naive to think that he’s not part of the problem.

It has been very interesting to watch how the attack on a female MP has fuelled the fires of hate. It seems that Albo’s team have been working away in the background to discredit Helen Haines as she had objected to some recent decisions made by the PM, but then to read that the attack on her was a secret plot to have her taken out is again another example of the ludicrous state of social media. We can’t stop the nutbags but surely it’s time to give our national security services more money and powers to stem the tide of hate?
