Anyone that runs their own business or strives to be their own person knows how hard it all is. Business is indeed all about persistence and a relentless pursuit of your goals, but it’s also about, working in that business on the tasks at hand, chasing bills and developing that business…it’s an incredibly hard balance.

My days are filled with spot fires, with talking to potential clients, chasing up invoices, dealing with family illnesses, school drop off, animals…not unlike anyone else, but today driving my youngest daughter to school she stripped away everything and made me refocus on what’s really important.

Each morning I make her lunch for school and sometime ago after she’d been a bit sad about something that had happened at school I put a note in her lunch box that said ‘YOU ARE
AWESOME! Love Daddy!’ She never really mentioned it, but I asked if she’d got the note and yes she liked it. A few weeks ago, a year or so after the first note she said asked if I could write her notes again, every day she said. So just checking in her Mum and I made sure she was ok, which she was and I said sure, a note every day it is.

Today driving to school out of the blue she said… “I love my notes everyday Daddy” At that moment I had this feeling of exhale. A feeling that sent everything away, a feeling that in that one moment my 10 year old daughter had made me refocus on what’s really important. That’s not to say my business, clients, readers etc…aren’t important they are, but my purpose in life is her. My purpose is to give her a life, an education and a set of tools to take out into the world that I didn’t have.

We chase all sorts of things, we deem success as a $25,000 watch or a car, a house, a boat when the things that really matter are sitting next to you in the car on the way to school.

Our businesses are important and my second purpose in life is to bring common sense, authenticity and accountability to the world via the things I do and I love what I do, but today I was reminded of what is at the core of my soul and why I am a very lucky man.

I can’t impress on people enough how important it is to have purpose, to have passion and to have a pathway that will help you discover who you really are.

Happy Wednesday!
